A program or service for validating a site with respect to the integrity of its links.

A Customer Retention and Web Promotion
concept

A crucial task to ensure your visitors experience a quality user experience when they visit your site, is to regularly check your links. Links away to other sites are especially prone to this form of dead-rot. Companies fail, are taken over or change their name resulting in websites disappearing or being renamed. Or websites are restructured resulting in specific pages becoming obsolete. And from the Web Promotion perspective, search engine spiders will validate the links on your pages. Broken links can seriously damage your web rankings. Alcander recommend W3C's free Link Validation tool and Xenu's Link Sleuth (a free download).

An arrangement between webmasters whereby they agree to link to each others sites.

A Web Promotion
concept

This is a commonly used method of promoting your web site. In general, you simply ask another web master to place a link to your site from his or her site and, in turn, you place a link to theirs. Obviously it may not be sensible to link to the competition, but it may be a good idea to link to someone who is in a complementary part of the market.

A measure of the number of quality links pointing to your site.

A Web Promotion
concept

Link Popularity is considered by many search engines as one of the most important qualities of a web site. It is not measured as the number of links you have pointing to your site, but as the number of quality links. Quality links are those that originate from complementary and relevant sites, and are also based on your keywords.
Links should only be from complementary and relevant sites, in order that you receive appropriate visitors and that you do not get penalized for spamming the search engines. See link farm.

An arrangement between webmasters whereby they agree to link to each others sites.

A Web Promotion
concept

Links farms are not recommended as a means of promoting your site. Although increasing your link popularity is a highly recommended way of promoting your site, merely being linked from (or linking to) inappropriate sites will result in your targetting an inappropriate audience. Such a technique could also result in your site being penalized with the search engines.
