Links away to other sites are especially prone to this form of dead-rot. Companies fail, are taken over or change their name resulting in websites disappearing or being renamed. This is a commonly used method of promoting your web site. In general, you simply ask another web master to place a link to your site from his or her site and, in turn, you place a link to theirs. Obviously it may not be sensible to link to the competition, but it may be a good idea to link to someone who is in a complementary part of the market.
